Accomplishments 2009 - Present

  • Installation of an accessible ramp at the gazebo in the Parksville Community Park
  • Designation of a handicapped parking space in front of Focus Day program for both clients of the program as well as visitors with disabilities
  • Presentations to various community organizations and municipal government
  • Walk/Wheel About - luminaries from Parksville and Qualicum Beach attended and experienced life with a series of visual, auditory and mobility challenges as they tried to negotiate the community.
  • Business Accessibility surveys - retail businesses, banks, grocery stores, etc. were surveyed by the Katimavik participants to assess accessibility and inclusion.
  • Access Parksville website - highlights the progress of the Committee and provides links
  • 2009 Parksville Accessibility Booklet - a publication which features beneficial information on resources, accessible recreation, universal design principles and much more that is designed to be a resource
  • SuperHost Disability Training - a service offered as a partnership between Parksville & District Chamber of Commerce and Oceanside Accessibility Committee that is designed to teach those in retail, service and other organizations how to respectfully and inclusively serve individuals with disabilities.
  • Municipal support for a $20,000 12-month rebate program to provide Parksville residents with a one-time grant not to exceed $1,000 for carrying out an accessibility project (either retrofit or new construction) using the City's accessibility checklist or the Oceanside Accessibility Committee's Accessibility Booklet as criteria for such work over the next 12 month period.
